VPD officer wont face charges after mans leg broken during struggle, says IIO

Vancouver, BCLocal News

The Independent Investigations Office of B. C. concluded that a Vancouver police officer did not commit an offence during a confrontation that resulted in a man's broken leg. The incident took place on January 25, when officers approached a man who had allegedly consumed a significant amount of alcohol and made sexual comments. One officer intervened after witnessing the man prepare to punch another officer, leading to the man being taken to the ground.

After the altercation, the man fell and was discovered to have multiple leg fractures, prompting an ambulance call. Paramedics noted the man's apparent intoxication, as he showed no signs of pain during treatment. The IIO's report highlighted that the injury appeared accidental, with no persuasive evidence of excessive force. Consequently, the IIO will not recommend charges against the officer involved. This investigation underscores the protocol followed by the IIO in police-related incidents resulting in serious injury.
