B.C. govt, public sector union entering non-binding talks
B. C. public sector workers will enter mediated talks with the provincial government, following seven weeks of strike action that involved over 25,000 workers. The BCGEU's bargaining committee has agreed to non-binding discussions mediated by Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers, aiming to resolve wage disputes that have significantly impacted public services. Union President Paul Finch remains optimistic, noting the emotional toll of the strike on members and the public's reaction to service withdrawals.
The primary sticking point is wages, with the union demanding a four percent increase compared to the province's two percent offer. Finch believes that a tentative agreement could be reached within days, contingent on both sides agreeing to the mediators' recommendations. The last wage increase for union members was in April 2024, and Finch emphasizes that wages in B. C. have lagged behind the average for a decade.
He argues that fair wages are essential for retaining staff, especially in the current job market. The outcome of these negotiations will be put to a vote among union members before finalization.
