Tunnelling complete for the Annacis Water Supply project
The completion of tunnelling for the Annacis Water Supply project marks a major advancement in Metro Vancouver's infrastructure. The tunnel boring machine, “Anna,” successfully excavated a 2. 3-kilometre tunnel between Surrey and New Westminster, enabling the installation of a robust water pipe. This pipe, over two-and-a-half metres in diameter, is designed to transport about 600 million litres of water daily and withstand significant seismic events. Murray Gant, director of tunnelling with Metro Vancouver, stated that the aim is to ensure water delivery during and after major earthquakes.
The project, initiated in 2022 with a budget of $450 million, is projected to be completed in 2028. Mayor John McEwen praised the project for staying on schedule and budget, countering negative perceptions of Metro Vancouver's infrastructure initiatives. Once operational, the tunnel will serve nearly a million homes, reinforcing the region's capacity to provide quality drinking water for years to come. This project exemplifies the commitment to upgrading critical water supply systems in the face of growing population demands.
