Project Muralize brings colours back to Chinatown

Vancouver, BCLocal News

Graffiti has plagued Vancouver's Chinatown, leaving local businesses frustrated with the ongoing vandalism. In response, the Vancouver Police Department has initiated Project Muralize, inspired by successful mural projects in other cities. Constable Freddy Lau, a Diversity Liaison Officer at the VPD, believes that murals can deter vandalism by fostering respect for art. Local artists James Hardy ‘Smokey D’ and Jesse Gouchey are creating vibrant pieces that beautify the area and carry cultural significance, like koi fish and pandas. Store manager Ellen Lin hopes these murals will attract more foot traffic and bring good fortune to businesses.

The project aims to enhance the community's appearance and vibe, providing a better atmosphere for residents and visitors alike. The initiative is entirely funded by the Vancouver Police Foundation, demonstrating a commitment to revitalizing the area. Ultimately, Project Muralize seeks to restore Chinatown's vibrancy and curb vandalism through artistic expression.
