Applications open for new medical school at SFUs Surrey campus
The Simon Fraser University School of Medicine in Surrey is now accepting applications, marking a significant milestone for medical education in Western Canada. Premier David Eby announced that the first cohort would start classes in August 2026, following the anticipated accreditation. An interim space will host students until the permanent facility is completed in 2030, establishing a hub for health innovation. Minister of Postsecondary Education Jessie Sunner noted that the school will initially enroll 48 students, with plans for future growth in enrollment. This initiative aims to retain medical students in Surrey, addressing the region's healthcare needs more effectively.
Eby stressed the school's importance for improving healthcare access across British Columbia. The establishment of this school is the first in over 50 years in Western Canada, highlighting its historical significance. The community has long seen students leave to pursue medical education elsewhere, making this development vital for local healthcare sustainability.
