Non-profit raising funds to finish 2SLGBTQIA community centre in Vancouver
Qmunity, a Vancouver non-profit, marked National Coming Out Day by launching a fundraising campaign to finish its new community centre for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Campaign Chair Sid Koshul described the centre as a visual statement of belonging, located at a significant intersection. The organization reported 15,000 people accessed its services last year, underscoring the urgent need for an upgraded facility. The current space, which has served for over 40 years, is deteriorating and inaccessible, with users facing a flight of stairs to enter. Executive Director Anoop Gill noted the alarming rise in anti-queer sentiment, particularly affecting youth, as highlighted by a recent failed bill targeting transgender health care.
Gill pointed out the disproportionate rates of suicidal ideation and homelessness among queer and trans youth. Qmunity aims for the new centre to provide a safe haven and essential services to counter these challenges. The facility is set to open in 2027, offering hope for a more supportive environment for the community.
