Still no timeline for rebuild two years after Port Coquitlam school burned down

Vancouver, BCLocal News

On October 14, 2023, a fire caused by human actions destroyed Hazel Trembath Elementary in Port Coquitlam, leaving the community in limbo for nearly two years. Students and staff were relocated to the Winslow Centre, which is a 20-minute bus ride away, but this arrangement was intended to be temporary. Despite the province's confirmation of funding for a new school in the 2025 budget, no construction timeline has been established. Mayor Brad West noted the city's efforts to facilitate the rebuild, indicating that they have exhausted all avenues for speeding up the process. Parents like Shawna Comey express concern that their children may not return to the new school, yet they continue to advocate for its importance.

The community plans to hold a rally next Friday to press the government for action. Minister of Infrastructure Bowinn Ma stated that staff are collaborating with the school district on the project. The next steps involve approval of the business plan and project budget.
