Brad Long, an intervention specialist at Indian Creek High School, and parent Mindy Aleksiejczyk will receive prestigious awards for their contributions to education on June 10 at Villa Milano in Columbus. Long will be honored with the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award for his commitment to helping students with disabilities succeed, while Aleksiejczyk will receive the Margaret M. Burley Outstanding Parent Award for her advocacy efforts. Nominated by John Rocchi, the district's special education coordinator, Long has dedicated ten years to the school district, significantly improving graduation rates through the Opportunity Center program, which serves 25 students.

Rocchi commended Long for his collaborative approach and respect among colleagues, noting that general education teachers often request him as a co-teacher. Long expressed humility at the recognition, highlighting the rewarding nature of his work and the importance of a supportive educational environment. The Opportunity Center was created to offer students who previously participated in online learning a face-to-face option, addressing concerns about graduation rates. Since its inception, the program has led to increased graduation rates and decreased dropout rates. Long’s dedication exemplifies the crucial role educators play in fostering student success and community engagement.
