Big decision ahead for electricity costs

Toronto, OHLocal News

PJM's board is preparing for a crucial vote on proposals that could save households up to $70 monthly on utility bills, affecting 67 million Americans. The Protecting Ratepayers Proposal, presented by a coalition of state legislators, seeks to address the surging electricity demands from data centers. Democratic leaders stress the urgency, forecasting that demand could surge to 60 GW, similar to adding a major city to the grid overnight. Key features of the proposal include options for data centers to join PJM while ensuring they bring their own capacity and preventing them from displacing existing renewable projects. The coalition's plan has garnered support from various groups, including the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Illinois Senator Rachel Ventura noted that the state has already started tackling these issues with the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act. The anticipated increase in electricity costs could exceed $100 billion through 2033, impacting families and businesses across PJM territory. The board's decision today will have lasting implications for regional energy policies and costs.
