Buckeye band director retiring after 30 years

Toronto, OHLocal News

Bill Stephens, the beloved band director at Buckeye Local High School, will retire on May 31 after a remarkable 30-year tenure. He has taught over 1,000 students and conducted nearly 400 halftime performances, including notable events such as the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D. C. , in 2014. His journey in music began with a push from his mother to take piano lessons, which eventually led him to a career in music education.

Following a ceremonial baton handoff to successor Chuck Eddy on March 29, Stephens expressed gratitude for his dedicated staff, whom he considers family. He has inspired many former students to pursue careers in music, including becoming band directors themselves. After retirement, he intends to remain active in music by directing the OVAC All-Star Band and assisting with band camp. He will also cherish more family time with his wife and two children. His departure marks the end of an era for the Buckeye Local community.
