Panhandle Trail paving set for completion
The final phase of paving for the Panhandle Recreation Trail in Weirton is now underway, completing the asphalt surface on the West Virginia section of the trail. The project, which has a total cost exceeding $300,000, reflects collaboration among various city departments and funding from multiple government levels and private foundations. Parks Director Coty Shingle noted that crews will pave nearly two miles, starting from the Walnut Street end and working backward. The project has benefitted from a TAP grant approved in 2018, with earlier phases completed in the fall of 2023 and another phase a year later. Shingle expressed gratitude for the public's patience during the lengthy process, which began with grant writing in 2016 and faced delays due to the pandemic.
Volunteers from the Weirton Rail Trail Committee have also contributed significantly by maintaining the trail and aiding in administrative tasks. The trail connects to regional bike routes, emphasizing its importance for recreation in the Tri-State Area. This project showcases the city's commitment to enhancing public spaces for community use and enjoyment.
