Planning Council receives brownfields grant
The Brooke-Hancock Region IX Regional Planning and Development Council has secured a $1. 2 million Brownfields Coalition Assessment Grant from the U. S. EPA. The grant will support environmental assessments and redevelopment initiatives in Hancock, Brooke, and Jefferson counties, with a focus on areas like Mingo Junction and Weirton.
Executive Director Michael Paprocki highlighted the transformative potential of the grant, stating it could turn idle lands into vibrant community hubs. Since 2015, the coalition has cataloged more than 67 sites, including the significant former Weirton and Wheeling-Pittsburgh steel properties. This funding follows four previous grants totaling $2. 4 million, which fostered collaborations with local and state development agencies. These partnerships have successfully attracted over $1.
3 billion in public and private investments, enhancing community infrastructure and economic prospects. The grant empowers local officials to initiate discussions on revitalization, aiming for smart and safe redevelopment that benefits residents. The ongoing efforts reflect a broader trend of repurposing brownfields to address environmental and economic challenges.
