Brooke Countys top teacher loves her job

Brooke County school officials celebrated Ash Leigh Negri as Teacher of the Year, highlighting her interactive teaching methods and dedication to student success. Principal Scott Donohew affirmed her ability to engage students with enthusiasm and effective lessons. Negri, who earned her degrees from West Liberty University after initially studying digital art, stated that helping kids learn brings her joy. The recognition also included Rick Schoonmaker, the school district's first bus driver to be named Service Personnel Member of the Year, commended for his dependability and commitment. Transportation Director Ron Staffileno noted Schoonmaker's willingness to adapt bus routes to meet student needs.

Both Negri and Schoonmaker are in contention for the West Virginia Teacher of the Year award. The Brooke County Board of Education also approved a purchase of touchscreen computers and accepted a bid for fire alarm system inspections during their meeting. Upcoming meetings will now be held at an earlier time to accommodate schedules.

Completion of exterior lighting at Stanton and John Gregg Elementary schools is expected by the end of October.
