Marshall to part ways with its AD

Toronto, OHLocal News

Marshall University confirmed it will not renew athletic director Christian Spears' contract, which expires in March 2026. Spears has been at the helm since 2022 and was instrumental in leading the athletics department through a transition to the Sun Belt Conference. Under his leadership, Marshall achieved notable successes, including winning the Sun Belt in football and significant facility upgrades like the opening of Jack Cook Field. Despite these accomplishments, Spears struggled to retain key coaches, with Caldwell and Huff both departing for other programs. In the fall Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, Marshall ranked 72nd nationally and first in the Sun Belt, reflecting a competitive athletic program.

President Brad Smith will oversee the search for a new athletic director, and Spears will continue in his role until a replacement is found. Potential candidates include former associate AD Jeff O'Malley and current ADs Andrew Goodrich and Chris Park. The university aims to ensure a smooth transition for its athletics leadership moving forward.
