Federal transportation officials warn states, local governments to end DEI, cooperate with ICE
West Virginia's transportation department will adhere to a federal directive mandating cooperation with immigration enforcement and the cessation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. U. S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized that federal grant recipients must ensure personnel practices are merit-based and not influenced by DEI initiatives. The directive follows President Trump's executive order aimed at eliminating DEI programs within the federal government.
West Virginia Department of Transportation Secretary Todd Rumbaugh confirmed the state's commitment to comply with these federal regulations. Governor Patrick Morrisey had previously signed an executive order requiring state agencies to review their DEI programs, further solidifying the state's stance against such initiatives. In fiscal year 2024, West Virginia received $855. 7 million in federal transportation aid, representing roughly 39% of the state's transportation revenue. Duffy's letter warned that noncompliance could lead to consequences concerning federal funding.
This move aligns with a broader policy trend across the country, focusing on immigration enforcement and the dismantling of DEI programs in various government sectors.
