Steubenville Council considers a biking and walking trail

Toronto, OHLocal News

Steubenville City Council is considering a biking and walking trail through Belleview Park, inspired by the successful opening of Jefferson County's Hellbender Trail. Councilman Dave Albaugh suggested that the trail would utilize city-owned land, alleviating concerns about securing property rights. He highlighted the potential economic benefits, noting that visitors attracted by the trail could support local hotels and restaurants. City Engineer Mike Dolak mentioned that an ordinance to authorize a feasibility study is necessary to assess the project. Councilman Royal Mayo raised questions about the trail's connection to the Great American Trail, which is only partially completed and dependent on the location of a new bridge.

The council is also looking at the possibility of removing traffic signals downtown to improve safety and access for cyclists. Dolak's ongoing study is nearly complete and aims to explore these changes in the downtown area. The council's decisions will impact the community's recreational offerings and local economy significantly.
