Mingo Junction pursuing ODNR grant for park improvement

Toronto, OHLocal News

Mingo Junction's Village Council approved Mayor Judy Ruckman to apply for a $35,610 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' NatureWorks program to enhance a village park. The reimbursement grant can fund up to 75 percent of eligible projects, requiring a 25 percent local match in cash or in-kind contributions. Ruckman opted to focus on the satellite park at Lincoln and Summit avenues, citing its frequent use by local children during the summer, while some council members suggested upgrading the better-maintained Aracoma Park instead. Village Administrator Darrin Corrigan reported that the village received $13,000 in recreation funding from the Jefferson County commissioners, which may not cover playground equipment for Aracoma Park. Instead, he proposed obtaining quotes for surveillance cameras to monitor the village's five satellite parks.

The council will determine which parks to prioritize for improvements and how to utilize the available funding. Ruckman also plans to solicit donations from local organizations to support the park's enhancements. The application for the grant must be submitted by June 1, ahead of the deadline.
