Styrofoam, related material added to JB Green Team recycling

Toronto, OHLocal News

Jefferson and Belmont counties launched a pilot program Tuesday that allows residents to recycle expandable polystyrene (EPS) through the JB Green Team. The program will feature five designated bins in each county for disposing of materials such as food containers and packaging, provided they are cleaned to some extent. Belmont County Commissioner Jerry Echemann pointed out that various manufacturers produce EPS, not just DuPont, which holds the Styrofoam trademark. This initiative represents Ohio's first community-based EPS recycling program, showcasing the JB Green Team's commitment to environmental sustainability. Bob Dever from Atlas Molded Plastics highlighted the novelty of community EPS recycling, expressing hopes that it will inspire similar efforts statewide.

The JB Green Team has allocated around $150,000 to this project, with $84,000 specifically for a foam densifier to compact the material. The program aims to prevent recyclable materials from occupying landfills and to promote a culture of recycling within the community. Local leaders are optimistic about expanding drop-off locations based on community engagement and participation.
