Weirton offers its thanks to all veterans

Weirton Mayor Dean Harris honored veterans during a ceremony at the Millsop Community Center on Veterans Day. He reflected on his father, 2nd Lt. David M. Harris, who served in World War II and spent time in prison camps after his plane was shot down. State Sen.

Ryan Weld, also a veteran, acknowledged the varied motivations for joining the military, from a sense of duty to opportunities for education. He pointed out that some were drafted and had no choice in the matter, emphasizing the importance of recognizing everyday veterans. The ceremony included the presentation of 10 wreaths by local organizations, such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. The event concluded with a salute to the fallen and the playing of taps by the American Legion Honor Guard. Harris's personal connection to military service resonated with attendees, reinforcing the community's gratitude for veterans.

Such observances serve to remind citizens of the sacrifices made for their freedom.
