Steubenville Council hears concerns about homeless
Community advocates in Steubenville convened with city leaders on Tuesday to formulate a plan for addressing homelessness after Urban Mission Ministries closed two emergency shelters due to state funding cuts. The closures have left many vulnerable individuals without resources, prompting concern among local residents and officials. Melody McClurg, director of the Jefferson Metropolitan Housing Agency, stated that homelessness is a widespread community issue faced by many cities in Ohio. While the city council voted 6-1 to seek bids for the rehabilitation of the Beatty Park Shelter, funding remains a significant barrier, with an estimated $96,000 required beyond current grants and insurance payouts. Councilman Mike Hernon advocated for obtaining bids to make an informed decision.
Community members expressed frustration at their inability to assist homeless individuals they encounter, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The council's discussions reflect a growing awareness of the challenges posed by homelessness in the region. As city officials work to address these issues, they must navigate logistical hurdles and secure necessary funding to provide adequate shelter and resources.
