Library levy meets voter approval

Toronto, OHLocal News

Jefferson County voters renewed a critical 1-mill, five-year levy for their public library, with 6,630 votes (52. 18%) supporting the measure. Library Director Mike Gray expressed gratitude for the approval, despite noting that anti-LGBTQ and anti-property tax sentiments made the vote closer. The library aims to continue providing quality services to all residents, regardless of their voting stance. The Committee for Decent Libraries campaigned vigorously against the levy, highlighting concerns over library book purchases, and reduced the margin from 40 points in 2019 to just four points in this election.

Gray emphasized the library's commitment to being a resource for the community, stating that they provide valuable services even when not actively sought. The library plans to open a new branch in Bergholz by 2026, enhancing its outreach and service capabilities. He acknowledged that much of their work is passive, waiting for individuals to seek assistance. Gray's comments reflect a commitment to community engagement and service amid ongoing challenges.
