Center important to West Liberty
West Liberty University recently launched its Appalachian Aquatic Conservation Center, becoming one of only four such facilities at U. S. universities. The center is designed to hatch crayfish and spotted turtle eggs, with plans to release the young into their natural habitats to support wild populations. Zachary Loughman, who chairs the organismal biology, ecology, and zoo science departments, highlighted the university’s commitment to animal conservation and its ability to attract students nationwide.
He stated, “If you are a young person and you want to do conservation, you can do that here. ” The center adds to WLU's existing facilities, which are competitive within West Virginia and beyond. This initiative not only enhances the university's educational offerings but also actively contributes to local biodiversity. As WLU continues to develop unique programs, it hopes to further attract students and bolster its conservation efforts. The Appalachian Aquatic Conservation Center represents a significant step in promoting environmental education and sustainability.
