Wellsburg gains unique tourist attraction with addition of Almost Heaven swing
Wellsburg officials inaugurated the Almost Heaven swing, a new tourist attraction overlooking the Ohio River, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday. The swing, handcrafted by students at the Nicholas County Career and Technical Center, is part of a statewide initiative featuring 52 swings across West Virginia. It includes a selfie station encouraging visitors to use the hashtag #AlmostHeaven on social media. Alex Weld, chair of the Urban Renewal Authority, noted the swing's location enhances the scenic beauty of the river and the historic Wellsburg Bridge. Mayor Dan Dudley suggested the swing could attract couples for wedding photos, enhancing local event opportunities.
The swing's installation reflects a broader strategy to boost tourism in Brooke County, which state officials reported generated $9. 1 million last year. The Urban Renewal Authority invested approximately $3,000 in the swing's cost, supported by local fundraising efforts. This project aims to draw visitors to other attractions in Brooke County, promoting regional tourism growth.
