Weirton establishing pre-treatment program for sanitary operations
Weirton Council unanimously approved an ordinance amendment to update sewer regulations during its Sept. 8 meeting. The changes ensure compliance with U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection standards, particularly as the city expands its wastewater treatment plant.
Utilities Director A. D. “Butch” Mastrantoni explained that the plant's capacity will increase from 4 million to 8 million gallons per day, necessitating a pre-treatment program for industrial discharges. This program will require industrial customers to treat their wastewater before it enters the municipal system, aiming to eliminate pollutants more effectively. New regulations will also mandate the construction of on-site treatment facilities and establish permitting requirements to prevent accidental discharges.
The amendment updates specific language regarding the roles of the Weirton Sanitary Board and utilities director to reflect these changes. This move is significant for local environmental management and public health. The ordinance reflects ongoing efforts to enhance the city's infrastructure and compliance with environmental regulations.
