Follansbee Council mulls fire station plans
Follansbee Council met to consider the future of the city's fire station, discussing whether to renovate the existing structure or build a new facility. Mayor Scott McMahon reported that $2. 7 million in federal funds has been allocated for renovations, while an independent grant writer advised applying for an additional $1. 5 million in state funds. Councilman John Schwertfeger raised concerns about investing in the current building, suggesting that a new firehouse should be located at the north end of the city.
City Fire Chief Larry Rea noted the changing demographics of volunteer firefighters, who are increasingly drawn from more populated areas. Renovation estimates from 2021 reached $4 million, raising doubts about the feasibility of the project without state funding. M&G Architects and Engineers designed plans for the current station, which include expanding bays and modernizing facilities. Council members are also considering whether the designs could be adapted for a new building. A work group will be formed to explore options and collaborate with M&G on potential modifications.
