Wellsburg officials mull meeting change, hear from private water provider
Wellsburg Council is actively considering a proposal for a second monthly meeting to facilitate voting, as current committee meetings are primarily discussion-oriented and lack engagement. Third Ward Councilman Tom Gaudio emphasized that the existing format is non-productive. Mayor Dan Dudley recently addressed the water-sewer board's meeting where representatives from West Virginia American Water expressed interest in taking over the city's water treatment system. He highlighted the challenge of securing funding for necessary infrastructure improvements and compliance with environmental regulations. Privatization could shift the authority to raise water rates from local officials to the water provider, raising concerns among residents.
The council will deliberate on the proposed meeting change at their next session on September 9. Meanwhile, the water-sewer board has invited the private company to provide more information on their proposal. This move could significantly impact the city's water management and infrastructure development.
