Playground, store go before Steubenville Council

Toronto, OHLocal News

Steubenville Council convened to discuss the establishment of an inclusive playground at Jim Wood Park and a potential Dollar General store at the former Grant School lot. The council considered a memorandum of understanding with Unlimited Play, which would receive $10,000 to plan the playground designed for children of various abilities. Mayor Jerry Barilla highlighted the park's existing utilities and parking, which would facilitate the project. Local business owner Mark Nelson raised concerns about selling city property for a Dollar General, suggesting alternatives like an open-air market to attract diverse businesses. He questioned the appropriateness of a for-profit venture on city-owned land and whether it aligns with the community's vision.

Barilla noted that residents in the south end have expressed a need for local grocery access. The council plans to invite Dollar General representatives to discuss their proposal before the next regular meeting. This initiative marks a significant step in addressing both community recreational needs and local business development.
