Dollar store proposal revisited by Steubenville Council
Steubenville City Council plans to meet with representatives from Dollar General to discuss building a new store on the former Grant School lot. Mayor Jerry Barilla noted the proposed store could serve South End residents who lack transportation options, as the nearest grocery store is a mile away. Council members shared diverse opinions; Fourth Ward Councilman Royal Mayo advocated for a store offering fresh produce and meat, while Fifth Ward Councilman Ted Gorman expressed concern over the increasing number of dollar stores in the city. City Manager Jim Mavromatis highlighted the need for property remediation before any development can occur. Councilman at large Joel Walker cautioned against voting on the property sale until after meeting with Dollar General.
The property has remained vacant for 23 years, prompting calls for action. A dozen jobs could be created, benefiting local residents. Council plans to finalize discussions with Dollar General before its August 26 meeting.
