Toronto, OHLocal News

Ohio County Emergency Management Director Lou Vargo recounted the intense flood response efforts after severe flooding struck the Wheeling area on June 14. Vargo and Assistant Director Tony Campbell logged over 156 hours each to manage rescue operations, which included searching for missing individuals and coordinating with state and federal officials. The flooding resulted in at least 37 homes being destroyed and nine fatalities, marking a significant disaster for the region. Vargo praised local officials, first responders, and volunteers for their effective teamwork and support throughout the crisis. Community donations, including food and handwritten notes from children, provided essential emotional support to responders.

The West Virginia National Guard played a crucial role in removing approximately 1,000 tons of debris, underscoring the flood's extensive impact. Vargo described the devastation as unlike anything he had witnessed in his 35 years with the agency. The National Weather Service had earlier warned of possible flooding, but the intensity of the storm caught many by surprise, leading to immediate emergency response actions.
