New Cumberland utility rates to increase
New Cumberland’s city council approved significant increases to water and sewer rates during a recent meeting, addressing financial inadequacies in the city's utility services. Water rates will jump from $12. 44 to $16. 17 per 1,000 gallons, with the minimum monthly billing rising from $24. 88 to $32.
34 for 2,000 gallons. The minimum charge for sewer services will also increase, from $35. 42 to $41. 80, while bulk treatment rates will rise from $3. 50 to $4 per 1,000 gallons.
Mayor Will White explained that the increases stem from a need to bolster monetary reserves, as highlighted in recent audits. Several residents suggested alternative billing structures, but officials confirmed that state regulations require uniform rate increases. The council's decision reflects ongoing financial challenges, marking the first utility rate hike since 2020. The new rates are set to take effect 45 days after approval. This move underscores the city's effort to maintain compliance with bond requirements and ensure sustainable utility services.
