West Virginias SNAP waiver gets approved
West Virginia's request to prohibit the use of SNAP benefits for sugary drinks received official approval from federal authorities. Governor Patrick Morrisey expressed the importance of the decision in addressing public health challenges in the state. The waiver also permits the purchase of specific hot foods, such as rotisserie chicken and steamed vegetables, to encourage healthier diets. Morrisey's initiative is part of his "Four Pillars of a Healthy West Virginia," which aims to improve nutrition and access to healthy food. Approximately 273,981 individuals in West Virginia benefit from SNAP, with soda purchases making up a notable portion of expenditures.
Secretary Rollins endorsed states as innovators in promoting healthy communities. Morrisey plans to push for increased work and education requirements for SNAP eligibility to enhance workforce participation. The decision marks a significant step toward improving public health in West Virginia.
