The Jefferson County Veterans Association marked its 30th anniversary at Friendship Park in Smithfield, drawing 36 veterans and active military personnel for its annual picnic. Adjutant Barry Bardone highlighted the significance of the day, honoring founding member Fred McGee, who was recently awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor during the Korean War. The event also celebrated the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, with a drawing for commemorative medallions representing the victories in Europe and Japan. The Tri-State Community Band provided a musical backdrop with patriotic anthems and the national anthem. Local businesses and volunteers received thanks for their contributions, emphasizing community support for veterans.

The picnic remains a free event each July, fostering camaraderie and recognition for those who served. This gathering strengthens ties within the community and promotes awareness of veterans' contributions. The JCVA continues to play a vital role in honoring military service and engaging the local population.
