Road conditions discussed in Brooke County
During a meeting on Tuesday, Brooke County Commissioners addressed residents' concerns regarding the poor condition of local roads, particularly U. S. Route 22 and Route 27. Joan Simonetti, a local resident, expressed frustration about the unevenness of Route 22, suggesting it negatively impacts business attraction in the area. Commission President A.
J. Thomas acknowledged these concerns and stated that the county commission has contacted local state representatives. He mentioned that they are set to meet with state highway officials later this month to discuss the funding formula that currently prioritizes road mileage over actual road usage. Additionally, Thomas revealed that the cost to repave Route 27 exceeds the funding allocated to the West Virginia Division of Highways’ District 6 Office. Local officials reported that Route 27, also known as Washington Pike, is not scheduled for repaving for another five years, despite numerous potholes and accidents.
Brooke County Sheriff Rich Beatty described the road as dangerous, emphasizing the need for immediate action. The commission urged residents to voice their complaints about road conditions online to facilitate improvements.
