A 13-year-old girl from Burgettstown drowned in the Ohio River near the Veterans Memorial Bridge on Monday evening. The Weirton Police Department reported receiving a call at 6:55 p. m. regarding a juvenile swept away by the current while swimming with family. Patrolman Adam Mortimer arrived shortly after, entered the water, and brought the girl back to shore, where life-saving measures were initiated.

She was then transported to WVU Weirton Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The Weirton Fire Department and Hancock County Ambulance Service also responded to the emergency. This incident underscores the risks associated with swimming in the river, particularly in areas with strong currents.
