City of Conroe and San Jacinto River Authority reach Settlement Agreement
The San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) Board unanimously approved a settlement agreement with the City of Conroe to end litigation related to the Groundwater Reduction Plan (GRP). The City Council of Conroe ratified the agreement, which is anticipated to benefit both entities. Under the settlement, Conroe will pay outstanding amounts owed since 2017 and will begin paying current treated surface water rates. In exchange, SJRA will offer additional surface water and reduce the GRP contract duration from 80 years to 40 years, forgiving prior penalties. This agreement resolves disputes dating back to 2016 over wholesale water rate increases.
Conroe City Administrator Gary Scott highlighted the significance of securing additional water for economic growth. The settlement reflects a commitment to collaboration and strengthens the partnership between the two entities. Agreement documents are currently in the process of being executed.
