Child Advocates of Montgomery County launches first-ever Summer Programming for justice-involved youth

Child Advocates of Montgomery County has launched a Summer Programming Series for youth at the Olen Underwood Juvenile Justice Center to provide essential engagement during the summer months. This initiative seeks to address challenges faced by youth when traditional educational structures are paused. The programming includes Nurture Groups focused on Trust-Based Relational Intervention® principles, emphasizing emotional regulation and healthy relationships. Additionally, sessions cover practical life skills, health education, and creative expression through art and writing. Ann Marie Ronsman, President & CEO of Child Advocates, stated these activities are vital in helping youth build resilience.

Judge Scharlene Valdez highlighted the importance of supportive adult involvement in fostering positive change. Staff at the detention center reported a reduction in behavioral incidents among participants, indicating the program's effectiveness. Child Advocates remains committed to expanding trauma-informed programming to support justice-involved youth’s healing and growth.
