Parks Tacoma creates climate plan

Tacoma, WALocal News

Parks Tacoma has unveiled its first Climate Action Plan, adopted on May 12, with the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Developed with the consulting firm Verdis Group, the 93-page plan emphasizes community involvement, especially from youth, in shaping its strategies. Objectives include reducing water consumption by 15-20% by 2030 and transitioning 75% of the vehicle fleet to electric by 2040. The plan also outlines strategies like conducting utility audits and updating existing budgets to align with climate goals. Matt Mauer, Park Board Vice President, highlighted the plan as a roadmap for a sustainable and equitable future.

This initiative responds to the pressing impacts of climate change in Tacoma, which has experienced rising temperatures and sea levels. In 2019, Tacoma declared a climate emergency, underscoring the urgency of this initiative. Parks Tacoma has already begun implementing eco-friendly practices, such as using electric trams at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park.
