Affordable Housing 21 Anti-Displacement Actions

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma's Anti-Displacement Strategy, adopted on February 6, 2024, represents a significant step in addressing the city's affordable housing challenges and resident displacement. The strategy builds on five years of the Affordable Housing Action Strategy, introducing 21 specific actions organized into four essential objectives: creating more homes, maintaining affordability, helping residents stay in their communities, and reducing barriers to housing access. Among the proposed initiatives are affordability incentives for developers, mandatory inclusionary zoning, and down-payment assistance programs for lower-income first-time homebuyers. The strategy also emphasizes the importance of proactive rental inspections to ensure safety and livability in rental properties. Furthermore, land banking practices and the regulation of short-term rentals are suggested to mitigate displacement risks.

Policies such as the Right of First Refusal and a dedicated Housing Preservation Fund aim to protect existing affordable housing stock. This comprehensive strategy reflects Tacoma's commitment to creating a more equitable housing landscape and supporting its residents. Through these actions, the city seeks to foster long-term stability and community resilience in the face of housing challenges.
