VTA files legal complaint over striking unions alleged contract breach
The VTA has filed a legal complaint against its striking workers from Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265, asserting that the strike constitutes a breach of contract and aims to restore halted bus and light rail services. The strike commenced after negotiations between the VTA and the union reached an impasse following six months of discussions. VTA General Manager Carolyn Gonot emphasized the strike's detrimental effect on the community, highlighting the urgent need for public transit to resume. In response, Union President Raj Singh labeled the complaint as “absurd,” pointing out that it is based on a contract that expired on March 3. He expressed disappointment over VTA's timing, as the union had provided advance notice of their intent to strike.
The VTA's latest wage proposal offers a 9% increase over three years, while the union demands an 18% total raise. Singh asserted that workers are committed to the strike until a satisfactory agreement is achieved, reflecting the high morale on the picket line. This labor dispute underscores the ongoing tensions between public transit agencies and labor unions regarding fair compensation and working conditions in Silicon Valley.
