Santa Clara makes it easier for youths to play sports
In a unanimous vote, the Santa Clara City Council has taken steps to enhance the Wade Brummal Scholarship program, aimed at assisting low-income youths with sports fees. The program's updates include a streamlined electronic application process and clearer guidelines on the scholarship’s usage, making it more accessible for families. Councilmember Suds Jain articulated the council's philosophy that all children should have the opportunity to play sports, while also encouraging equitable contributions from those who can afford it. Established in 2015, the scholarship fund currently holds around $235,000, supported by fees from non-residents participating in local sports. Community representatives, such as Mike Walke from the Police Activities League, have voiced support for the changes, highlighting the previous cumbersome application process as a barrier to utilization.
Parks and Recreation Commissioner Vikas Gupta noted that awareness has been a significant issue, with many nonprofit youth sports groups underutilizing the program. Additionally, the city is addressing field booking fees, reducing them from $14 to $8 per hour to alleviate financial burdens on low-income families. These initiatives collectively aim to foster youth sports participation and ensure equitable opportunities for all children in the community.
