Sunnyvale to spruce up downtown pedestrian mall

Sunnyvale, CALocal News

The Sunnyvale City Council has approved plans to transform the historic Murphy Avenue block into a permanent pedestrian mall, a move aimed at enhancing the downtown experience for both residents and visitors. This redevelopment plan includes features like increased bike parking and improved accessibility, which have been shaped through extensive community input. Executive Director Mike Johnson of the Sunnyvale Downtown Association noted that the project balances the needs of various stakeholders, particularly small and family-owned businesses. The transformation is part of a larger downtown revitalization spearheaded by developer Cityline, which has already introduced significant retail options, including an AMC theater and Target. Councilmember Alysa Cisneros expressed excitement about the project’s potential to improve walkability for future generations, contrasting it with her own childhood experiences in the suburbs.

Construction is projected to start in fall 2025, with completion anticipated by early 2026. This initiative not only aims to beautify the area but also to stimulate economic growth and community interaction. The ongoing development also includes efforts to build affordable housing, strategically located near essential resources for low-income residents.
