Sunnyvale traffic deaths spark safety concerns
In response to a troubling series of pedestrian fatalities, Sunnyvale officials are taking action to enhance traffic safety on Fair Oaks Avenue, a road notorious for its high speeds and limited pedestrian infrastructure. Councilmember Richard Mehlinger, representing the area, has voiced concerns about the lack of sufficient crosswalks and safety measures, particularly following the recent death of a pedestrian at a busy intersection. Since 2019, the city has recorded 11 fatal collisions involving vehicles and pedestrians or cyclists, highlighting the pressing need for change. The proposed study aims to assess potential safety features, including traffic signals and roundabouts, at critical intersections along Fair Oaks Avenue. However, city staff have indicated that resource limitations may delay these plans, raising concerns among residents who frequently witness dangerous conditions.
Local advocates stress that the current infrastructure does not meet the needs of a community with schools and parks nearby, where families and children are particularly vulnerable. The city council's upcoming hearing on February 13 is expected to delve deeper into these safety issues and proposed solutions. As community members rally for improved safety measures, the situation underscores the broader inequities in public safety resources throughout the region.
