Garfield Elementary celebrates Cinco de Mayo in the sun

Sunnyside, WALocal News

On Friday, Garfield Elementary in Toppenish celebrated Cinco de Mayo, bringing joy to students with tacos and churros on the playground. Organizer Betty Zuniga worked diligently to secure donations for over 300 students, highlighting community support in her efforts. This event marks Zuniga's first schoolwide celebration for Cinco de Mayo, following her success with various community events throughout the year. After losing her teaching position last year, she embraced her role with ESD 105, enabling her to reach a larger audience. Zuniga aims to make these celebrations accessible to all elementary schools in the district, fostering a sense of community across Toppenish.

"It's such a blessing to be able to help not just 24 students in a classroom, but a bigger amount than that," she stated. Her vision reflects a commitment to cultural celebration and community engagement, vital for local schools. As she looks to the future, Zuniga hopes to inspire similar initiatives throughout the district.
