City Provides Annual Report on Drinking Water Quality
The City of Spokane released its 2024 annual drinking water quality report, confirming compliance with all state and federal standards. The report noted low-level detections of PFAS chemicals at three well locations, with one detection slightly surpassing revised EPA standards but remaining below the compliance limit. The City’s Water Department conducts ongoing testing to ensure safety and has implemented updated monitoring procedures. Marlene Feist, the City’s Director of Public Works, highlighted the critical need for vigilance in delivering clean drinking water as environmental contaminants increase. Spokane has joined a lawsuit against manufacturers responsible for PFAS contamination and is collaborating with the Spokane Aquifer Joint Board to investigate potential sources.
The City also promotes water conservation through its Water Wise Spokane program, which includes a mandated odd/even watering schedule to reduce waste during peak irrigation seasons. This initiative aims to protect water resources while maintaining affordable rates and supporting landscaping health. With 1,000 miles of distribution lines and eight well stations, the City serves approximately 80,000 homes and businesses.
