City Provides Annual Report on Drinking Water Quality
Spokane’s Water Department released its 2024 report on drinking water quality, confirming that it meets all state and federal standards. The report highlights low-level PFAS detections at three well sites, with one site slightly above the new EPA standard based on a four-quarter average. The City is committed to maintaining safe drinking water through enhanced testing and ongoing follow-up at affected locations. Director of Public Works Marlene Feist stated the necessity of vigilance as contaminants increase in the environment. Spokane has joined a lawsuit against PFAS manufacturers and collaborates with the Spokane Aquifer Joint Board to investigate potential contamination sources.
The City actively monitors regulatory changes and encourages community awareness through its Water Wise Spokane program, emphasizing water conservation. An ordinance requiring an odd/even watering schedule aims to reduce water waste during peak irrigation seasons. The Spokane water system consists of 1,000 miles of distribution lines, delivering up to 150 million gallons daily to around 80,000 homes and businesses.
