Park Levy Would Fund Fuels Reduction and Trail Improvements

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane is taking proactive measures to enhance Edwidge Woldson Park, focusing on wildfire mitigation and trail improvements through a $1. 5 million grant. Crews recently treated 5 acres of the park, removing overgrown vegetation to lower fire risks and improve the landscape. This collaboration between Spokane Fire and Parks & Recreation aims to create a healthier forest environment while reducing illicit activities. Wildland resource planner Nick Jeffries noted that the mitigated area would only face fast-moving grass fires in the event of a wildfire.

If the Parks levy is approved by voters, significant upgrades will follow, including ADA-accessible trails and enhanced connectivity. The proposed improvements also include a restroom, bike parking, and a garden plaza. This project builds on a 2016 plan and reflects a commitment to community safety and park accessibility. The initiative is expected to positively impact the local community, particularly the youth programs at the nearby Corbin Art Center.
