Apartment Fire Prompts Evacuation Assistance, No Injuries Reported

Spokane, WALocal News

Firefighters extinguished a fire at the Sky View Apartments in Spokane on May 22, 2025, after residents reported black smoke at 12:48 p. m. The fire occurred in a main floor unit undergoing renovations, leading to evacuation challenges for upper-floor residents due to thick smoke in the hallways. Engine 1, Truck 1, and Truck 4 arrived within four minutes, confirmed the smoke, and quickly extinguished the flames. Firefighters rescued two occupants, who were then evaluated by AMR paramedics and found to be stable.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental, caused by a stovetop turned on with combustible materials placed on top. Fortunately, fire damage was contained to the area of origin, and no residents were displaced. Officials remind residents to close doors during a fire to slow growth and protect occupants during evacuation. Rapid response and suppression efforts prevented the flames from extending into shared hallways, averting a more dangerous situation.
