Apartment Fire Prompts Evacuation Assistance, No Injuries Reported

Spokane, WALocal News

Firefighters responded to a fire at the Sky View Apartments in Spokane at 12:48 p. m. on May 22, 2025, after reports of black smoke from a window. The fire originated in a main-floor unit undergoing renovation, affecting the common hallway and trapping some upper-floor residents. Engine 1, Truck 1, and Truck 4 arrived within four minutes, confirming visible black smoke and quickly extinguishing the flames.

Firefighters rescued two occupants who needed assistance due to the thick smoke, and both were evaluated by AMR paramedics and found stable, with no medical treatment required. An investigation determined the fire was accidental, caused by a stovetop being turned on with combustible materials placed on top. Fire damage was limited to the area of origin, but smoke impacted multiple hallway walls. Fire officials urged residents to close doors during fires to slow the spread of smoke and flames, especially in multi-family buildings. The rapid response and effective suppression efforts prevented a more dangerous situation.
