Fire Displaces Eight in Spokane Fourplex Cigarette on Balcony Sparked Blaze

Spokane, WALocal News

At 12:19 p. m. on May 19, 2025, Spokane Fire Department crews responded to a fire at a fourplex on East Decatur Avenue, where they found flames on a second-floor balcony. Firefighters contained the blaze within 15 minutes, but the fire had already spread to the attic, necessitating roof ventilation and ceiling removal for full extinguishment. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but all four units experienced severe smoke and water damage, displacing eight residents.

The American Red Cross has stepped in to assist with temporary housing for the affected families. Investigators determined that the fire was caused by a cigarette improperly discarded in a plastic container, exacerbated by breezy conditions. The Spokane Fire Department reminds residents to dispose of cigarettes in metal containers with lids or soak them in water before disposal. This incident highlights the importance of fire safety and proper disposal practices. Local officials urge community awareness to prevent similar fires in the future.
