City of Spokane Water Department Receives 2.8 Million Clean Energy Grant
The City of Spokane’s Water Department received a $2. 8 million Clean Energy Community Grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to enhance solar infrastructure at its main facility. This funding, along with a nearly $200,000 local match, will support the design and installation of solar arrays, parking structures, battery storage, and charging stations. Public Works Director Marlene Feist emphasized the project’s importance for delivering clean drinking water affordably while modernizing infrastructure. Jon Snyder, Director of Transportation and Sustainability, remarked on the project’s role in promoting sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in underserved neighborhoods.
The grant represents a significant investment in the Water Department's resilience and functionality, benefiting the local community. Enhancements will also ensure clean air and a healthier environment for nearby schools. The initiative is a crucial step toward achieving the city’s sustainability goals. The collaboration with the state Department of Commerce underscores the importance of community-focused clean energy projects.
